Professors from Barcelona School of Civil Engineering participate in a European project to improve the response to climate change emergencies

The Centre de Recerca Aplicada en Hidrometeorologia (CRAHI) integrated by several professors from the School, participates in the European project RESIST - Regions for climate change resilience through Innovation, Science and Technology.

 

This project, endowed with 25 million euros by the Horizon Europe program of the European Union, aims to study the application of tools to improve adaptation to weather emergencies to increase resilience to climate change.

Catalonia has been one of the 12 regions selected by the European Commission to participate in a European project endowed with 25 million euros in funding to improve adaptation to serious emergencies caused by climate change. The aim of the initiative, called RESIST - Regions for climate change resilience through Innovation, Science and Technology , and in the framework of the 'Adaptation to Climate Change' mission of the Horizon Europe program of the European Union, is to improve the capabilities of detecting extreme situations such as floods, droughts, heatwaves, wildfires, and soil erosion, as well as achieving greater preparedness of society and municipalities.

The project will start in January 2023 and will last for five years. This week saw the formal start of the project with the inaugural meeting of partners in the Portuguese city of Coimbra, where the first work actions were defined.

The application in Catalonia will receive 2.5 million euros from the partners who are part of the project: the Direcció General de Protecció Civil del Departament d’Interior de la Generalitat de Catalunya; the Centre de Recerca Aplicada en Hidrometeorologia (CRAHI) of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya -  BarcelonaTech (UPC); the research group CARENET of the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC); Hyds (UPC's spin-off company) and the town councils of Terrassa and Blanes. The project has the support of ACCIÓ, the agency for business competitiveness of the Departament d’Empresa i Treball of the Generalitat.
