Seminar - "Recent developments on reduced order modeling for flow mechanics", by Joan Baiges

In this seminar several developments carried out by the authors on reduced order modeling (ROM) for fluid mechanics problems will be presented. An approach for Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) methods which take into account the effect of the discarded modes through a Variational Multiscale Method (VMS) will be explained, together with a strategy for combining POD and finite element simulations. Finally, a recent ROM model based on adaptive mesh refinement and artificial neural networks will be presented.

SPEAKER CV

Joan Baiges is an Associate Research Professor at CIMNE, and Lecturer at the Technical University of Catalonia, where he teaches in Continuum Mechanics and Structural Analysis. His research focuses in Fixed-Mesh methods for the finite element method applied to Fluid-Structure Interaction and Reduced-Order Models applied to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. During his research career he has participated in several research projects at the national and international level, most of the focused in the improvement of numerical techniques for simulating turbulence.

He graduated in 2007 as a Civil Engineer in the Barcelona School of Civil Engineering (ETSECCPB), and he developed his doctoral studies at the Technical University of Catalunya. He was awarded an Extraordinary Doctorate Award by the UPC, and the award to the best doctoral thesis in numerical methods, awarded by the Spanish Society of Numerical Methods in Engineering.
