Professor Juan Murcia-Delso, from Barcelona School of Civil Engineering and member of the research group on Analysis & Technology of Structures & Materials, has been awarded a Leonardo grant for  his innovative work in the field of infrastructure resilience before extreme climate phenomena.

The 2025 Leonardo Grants awarded by the BBVA Foundation, selected 60 projects from a total of 1,623 applications, among which was the project presented by Professor Juan Murcia Delso, "Desarrollo de nuevos topes laterales para un diseño resiliente de puentes frente a eventos climáticos y sísmicos extremos". The project focuses on the development of new structural devices, known as shear keys, designed to protect bridges from adverse climate events such as earthquakes, floods, or cyclones. These elements act as structural fuses, absorbing damage to prevent serious damage to the bridge's main structure.

With this grant, Professor Murcia joins the prestigious Leonardo Network, which this year includes researchers and creators from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) such as Professor Gissell Estrada and researcher Inés Aquilué.
